Honorary citizenship of Poznan for prof. Jan Węglarz

Professor Jan Węglarz is the director of Institute of Computing Science of Poznan University of Technology since 1990. He was born in 1947 in Poznan. He studied at the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan, where he graduated in mathematics in 1969. He received a doctorate in 1974, and habilitation in 1977. In 1988 he received the title of professor.

Professor Węglarz is a member of Polish Academy of Sciences, and also member of American Mathematical Society, Operations Research Society of America, member and co-founder of Polish Information Processing Society. He received honorary doctorates from several Polish institutions, including Szczecin University of Technology and AGH University of Science and Technology.

The title will be awarded during a ceremony held in Poznan City Hall on 29th June, which is the day of the city patrons – saint Peter and saint Paul.

Poznan University of Technology in the ranking of the best universities in the world

Poznan University of Technology is on fourth place among Polish universities in the ranking of the best universities in the world, based on the number of citations of scientific papers registered on individual profiles on Google Scholar.

The highest, 562. place in Poland was obtained by University of Warsaw with 70 242 citations. Placed 665. was Warsaw University of Technology with a total citations count equal to 56 170. Nicolaus Copernicus University was 837. in the ranking with 38 908 citations. Poznan University of Technology was 842. with 38 462 citations. Further in the ranking was Jagiellonian University with 32 576 citations and place 944. Next was University of Wroclaw at 959. place and 31 797 citations, Wroclaw University of Technology at 1038. place and 23 793 citations and finally Medical University of Warsaw with 24 327 citations and place 1101.

Prof. Zbyszko Królikowski is a new member of PAC

In January a new term of office in Polish Accreditation Committee has been started. PAC is the institution that is responsible for the quality of education in Polish universities. One of the members in current term of office is prof. Zbyszko Królikowski, PhD. Eng., Vice Dean for Education at Faculty of Computing in Poznan University of Technology.

The new committee consists of 90 members. They have to represent all areas of education that are being taught at Polish universities. The members are chosen from the candidates submitted by, among others, universities, rectors and student organizations. Term of office for the new committee is 4 years.

Summary of Game Industry Conference

Game Industry Conference is the new name for the conference organized every year since 4 years, earlier known as “Zjazd Twórców Gier”. It took place at the Poznan International Fair during the Poznan Game Arena from 16th to 18th October. This year it has been patroned not only by Rector and Dean of our University, as well as Ministry of Economy since last year, but also by Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The conference consisted of 110 lectures, workshops and discussion sessions presented by 126 speakers. The speakers represented many game development companies from Poland and 40 companies from abroad. The topics included all important elements of the game development process: design, programming, graphics, audio, plot creation, new technologies, production, business aspects and research done in game industry.

In total there were 2940 audience members, and this number comes from the open format of the conference. This year a system for business meetings have been introduced, in which game creators could meet with publishers and investors. Over 150 registered participants, 643 invites and 484 meetings were held during the conference, which is a great success.

Welcome to Game Industry Conference!

Ruch Projektantów Gier, a science circle at PUT, has been organizing a scientific conference related to creating games under the name of “Zjazd Twórców Gier” for four years. This was an event held together with Poznan Game Arena, a market fair about computer games.

More and more people are visiting the conference and therefore the changes were inevitable – the name has been changed to Game Industry Conference to make it easier for all foreign visitors to find information about the event.

Each year the conference is breaking new records, both in terms of the number of sessions, as well as in the number of guests. Last year it hosted 89 talks from 104 speakers, from whom 37 were from a foreign countries. There were over 3000 guests and more than 650 were professionally connected with computer game design. The conference also hosted 4 workshops with around 60 participants.

GIC will be held in 2015 from October 16 to October 18, as always together with Poznan Game Arena. The entrance to GIC is free for all participants of PGA. We would like to warmly welcome everyone interested in game design and encourage you to visit GIC this year!

IIIrd place in Pizza 2015 comptetition for our students

The students of the Ist year of Computing, Adam Krasucki and Szymon Melewski, teamed together to take the IIIrd place in the Pizza 2015 programming competition organized by University of Wroclaw.

The participants had to compete against 115 other teams in the eliminations, and among them 35 best teams competed in the grand finals. They have been beaten by one of many teams from University of Warsaw and by a team which consisted of the employees of Google Cracow.

The goal of the competition was to implement an algorithm that had to play different games using network environment and win against algorithms made by other teams. In each game there was a non-trivial problem to solve, which had to be extended with an artificial intelligence module and implement the network protocols to compete with other teams.

Tomasz Głowacki, PhD, received an award for his PhD thesis from City of Poznan

We are happy to announce that in the most recent award ceremony for the best PhD thesis held by the City of Poznan, the thesis from Tomasz Głowacki, PhD, received the highest honours and therefore has been awarded in this ceremony.

His thesis entitled “Zastosowanie metod opartych na teorii grafów do rozwiązywania wybranych problemów analizy sekwencji nukleotydowych i aminokwasowych” (eng. “Graph theory based methods applied to solve selected problems of nucleotide and aminoacid sequencing”) was supervised by Piotr Formanowicz, PhD. Hab., Prof. PUT, and defended on our university.

IGEM 2014 – success of Bioinformatics students

In the finals of IGEM 2014 in Boston, a team of Bioinformatics students: Krzynowek Weronika, Nowicka Melania, Rżosińska Katarzyna, Bartoszewicz Jakub earned a bronze medal in the software category.

IGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) is an international competition of synthetic biology that is held each year since 2003.
